Alta Journal took home eight honors at this week’s San Francisco Press Club 46th Annual Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards. This is the first year Alta entered the contest, which judges over 540 submissions in four divisions: daily newspapers, digital media, non-daily newspapers, and magazines/trade publications. Judges for the contest hail from press clubs around the country.

Alta was delighted to win Overall Excellence in the magazine category. We also took home a first-place win in Cover Design, for Michael Schwab and Alta creative director John Goecke’s Made in California Issue cover, and a first-place win in Feature Story/Light Nature, for Gary Kamiya’s “They Left Their Hearts in San Francisco.”

Second-place wins included Denise Hamilton’s “California Is Hog Wild,” for Environment/Nature Report; Goecke’s Alta’s Favorite Bookstore Guide, for Feature Layout Design; and Alta digital editor Beth Spotswood and assistant editor Jessica Blough for Alta Live, in the Blog/Commentary category. Alta Live also took home third place for Series or Continuing Coverage. Sands Hall took home third-place honors in Investigative Reporting for her feature “‘The Ways of Fiction Are Devious Indeed.’

Another perk of the night: toasting Alta contributors recognized for their work in other publications, including Faith Adiele, who won first place for an entertainment review in Smithsonian Folklife, “A Light in the Window of the World: Protest Art and Black Liberation.”

Held at the Elks Lodge No. 3 in downtown San Francisco, the gala dinner featured a lifetime achievement award for KRON 4’s Pam Moore and a question and answer session with the New York Times’ San Francisco bureau chief, Heather Knight. Check out the full list of winners here.•
